It had long been a wish of BBR members to regauge and restore a few freight wagons to create more of an atmosphere around the railway and also enable the operation of something other than a passenger train.

Just occasionally, we can and do play trains.

"Enthusiast Days"

During the period from 1994 - 2002 the BBR operated special days known as "Enthusiast Days", "Transport Gala Day" & "Rail Nostalgia Day" whereby a timetable was arranged around the assorted available rollingstock, to provide a day of Passenger & Freight Trains, Mixed Goods,  Heritage Trains and photo opportunities.

The BBR hopes to once again operate another Enthusiast Day but to date none are scheduled.

Here below is a selection of photos from some of these events as well as a few other unscheduled occurrences.

"Chartered Goods Train"

Sunday 7th of October 2007 was a little more unusual than a normal Sunday on the BRR. The Mussel Pool depot was abuzz with members preparing locomotives for the days running. The rostered crew were out early to relight and prepare Ng123 and Planet #1 for the regular service train.  An extra crew had also been mustered for the running of a chartered demonstration steam goods / freight train which would use 0-4-2 Perry locomotive BT1 and a consist of the BBRs restored freight wagons.

When BT1 had a full head of steam, we departed the depot into the yard at Mussel Pool. Due to the positioning of wagons at Mussel Pool, there was a need for a major shunt of the yard as one of the wagons desired by the photographer for the freight train was D33 which naturally was in the hardest position to get at - at the back of the goods shed road.

Ng123 prepares to depart Mussel Pool as BT1 enters the yard to start shunting wagons  First move was to pickup the JOA & then clear the QBB & J from the goods shed head shunt Then return to the shed road and couple to the LA which was standing alone. Then to pickup D33 from the goods shed.

BT1 draws the LA and D33 from the goods shed

The D van is placed clear of the good shed road  After cutting off D33, BT1 returns to the head shunt and then pushes the LA ballast hopper back into the goods shed.

The D van is then coupled to the JOA and then the QBB & J are returned to their original location After collecting a R wagon and the Z brakevan from the carriage shed, our goods train departs Mussel Pool On arrival at WVJ the V van is picked up & shunted onto the Goods The goods departs WVJ for Kangaroo Flats and the loop as Ng123 arrives at WVJ
