Recollections of Nungarin Station by James Waterhouse Merv Waterhouse (grandfather of BBR member James Waterhouse) worked at Nungarin station helping the Station Master during the war, as he was to young to go to war. He recalls - During the war, Nungarin station was used as a main army supply depot and had tanks, uniforms and food. The shortage of facilities were described as being "Huge". The reason that Nungarin was used as a main depot was because it was isolated, which lessened the threat of it being bombed during the war. The route by railway was unusual as it had 2 routes, this was so if one line was bombed they could still get to the coast. Greta Waterhouse took the above picture of the station in the 1960's. A noticeable difference is the roof. It had tiles then, but because of termites eating the roof timbers, it was rebuilt and the tiles replaced with iron.
